Australian Government is covering a public health system in Australia which is called Medicare and every Australian citizen is eligible for Medicare. But the question is, as an overseas visitor are you eligible for Medicare benefits? If you are a resident of any of the countries mentioned below that has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia, then you will be eligible for Medicare.

  • New Zealand;
  • United Kingdom (UK);
  • Ireland;
  • Italy;
  • Malta;
  • Finland;
  • Sweden;
  • Netherlands;
  • Belgium;
  • Norway;
  • Slovenia.


This is the agreement that the residents of these countries can get some essential medical treatments while visiting Australia. The same benefits will be given to Australian residents when they visit those countries.
However, you will find some conditions that varies among these countries.

  • Firstly, if you are the resident of Finland, New Zealand, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and UK, you will be covered by Medicare as long as you stay in Australia with valid visa;
  • Secondly the residents from Belgium, Netherlands or Slovenia, need their European Health Insurance card to enrol in Medicare;
  • Lastly, if you visit from Malta or Italy, you will be covered for a period of 6 months starting from your arrival date in Australia.
