You, as backpackers or working holiday makers are international visitors holding visas, which gives you the right to work while you are in Australia. If you are a temporary resident working at any firm in Australia then your employer must pay superannuation for you if you are eligible.
What is superannuation, you ask? Superannuation is a fund which the employer pays to ATO so that you can draw the deposited amount of money when you retire. If you have earned more than $450 over a continuous rolling 4 week period the employer must pay 9.5% of your annual gross salary into a superannuation fund on your behalf. When you have worked as an employee of any company, and earned superannuation from employer while visiting Australia on a temporary visa, you can apply to have this superannuation paid to you as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP) after you leave.

Want to know the good part…. You can claim your super either online or by lodging a paper application. Online applications are free of charge and can be submitted through the DASP online application system for super funds. Paper applications incur a cost, as they require you to get and pay for a certificate of immigration status from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).
