If you are using your own phone and internet for work purposes you can claim a deduction if you paid for these expenses and have the proper records to prove it. But if you use your device for both personal and business purposes, then you have to find out the percentage of work use to claim for deduction. You must submit detailed records of your bill to get this deduction.

To claim a deduction of more than $50, you need to keep a record for a 4-week representative period that includes your diary entries, containing electronic records, and bills. But if you are not claiming a deduction of more than $50, then you can claim a deduction based on the following data:

  • $0.25 for work calls made from landline;
  • $0.75 for work calls made from mobile;
  • $0.10 for text messages sent from mobile.

For this you must work out the percentage by using the quantity of calls, time duration and the amount of data downloaded for work purposes. But if you use a phone plan where you are not able to receive an itemised bill, then you must keep a record for 4-weeks representative period.
