EXPLAIN THE OFFSETS OR REBATES IF YOU HAVE MAINTAINED AN INVALID OR INVALID CARER

In Australia, if you maintain certain people, who are of 16 years of age or above and enjoying particular government payments, then you may be entitled to a tax offset (sometimes referred to as tax rebates). This tax offset is only available in limited circumstances. A Taxpayer is only eligible to claim a dependent tax offset if he has an invalid spouse, brother, sister, child who has been certified by a medical practitioner as unable to work unless they are receiving any government invalid or carer payment for the full financial year.

To calculate the tax offsets, you must need the following information:

  • Details of you and your current spouse's (if any) adjusted taxable income;
  • Details of your former spouse's income (if you had more than one spouse at different times of the year);
  • Adjustable taxable income of your invalid or invalid carer;

The outcome of tax offsets will be calculated based on the information you enter. If you change or add any details in between an income year, you must need to add those in your tax return as well. The tax offset is directly reduced from the amount of tax payable from your tax return.
