ATO ELECTRONIC LODGEMENT SYSTEM

If you are hiring an agent to lodge your tax return, then he/she may lodge your tax return electronically. Your agent may lodge tax returns and fringe benefits tax returns electronically through electronic lodgement service (ELS) enabled software or Standard Business Reporting (SBR) enabled software.
ELS is an electronic online system that enables registered tax agents to lodge income tax returns and other forms, as well as create reports to assist with managing workloads. Benefits of registering and using the ELS include:

  • Ease of access;
  • Reduction in paper use;
  • Accuracy of data (cross check with software);
  • Choice of software providers;
  • Faster turnaround time on electronically-lodged forms;
  • Privacy and secure; 
  • 24-hour access;
  • Acknowledgment of lodgement; If an agent is lodging a tax return, activity statement or other approved form on behalf of a client via the ELS, he/she must:
  • Obtain a declaration from his/her client authorising him/her to lodge their return and declaring that the information they have provided to him/her is true and correct; 
  • Ensure that he/she has completed the tax agent certificate before lodging his/her client's return via the ELS if he/she use shared facilities, that is if he/she prepared the return but another tax agent lodges it on his/her behalf; 
  • Provide him/her client a copy, or the original, of the notice of assessment if their address for service of notice is his/her address.

Standard Business Reporting (SBR) will replace the electronic lodgement service (ELS). To ensure tax professionals have access to a reliable electronic lodgement service, ATO will extend the transition period and maintain ELS until 31 March 2017.
